Want to lose weight? Eat more!

Inch Loss

Yes, you heard me right. I’m suggesting that you may need to eat more to lose weight. At certain times, that is. Let me explain.

If you exercise vigorously and you don’t eat properly both before and after, you could end up burning more muscle than fat. To help your body take advantage of that hard workout, you need to eat before and after. Susan Kleiner, PhD, Rd, and coauthor of Power Eating says this: “Everyone needs to eat around the time of their workout, whether their goal is health, performance or weight loss. When you eat around exercise, you increase the rate of calorie burning.”

Before exercise, you need a small, high carb meal. Best time is 1 to 2 hours before you exercise. Your body needs the carbs to power the exercise. Of course, I’m not talking about donuts and cookies here! Go for whole grains or fruits instead and your body will thank you.

After your workout, you need to replenish quickly with something that’s easy to digest. Consider a smoothie with fruit and some protein powder or soy milk. Recent research showed that this carb-protein snack after exercise helps you build lean muscle mass and lose fat. Cinch shake mix is great for this. Mix it with fruit or juice and you’re good to go.

Eat the right things at the right time and you’ll give your body a nudge in the right direction.

Resveratrol and AGEs - Anti-aging at the cellular level

By the time you can vote, you’re already aging at the cellular level. That’s right, your cells are getting damaged, your DNA is getting bombarded, and things are headed downhill. A lifetime of this cellular damage eventually contributes to age-related cellular deterioration, causes various diseases, and contributes to overall decline.

AGEsOne of the 4 key mechanisms of cellular aging is what are known as AGE proteins. AGE stands for Advanced Glycation End products. Excess accumulation of AGEs can cause cellular damage that can compromise cell integrity and longevity. AGEs affect nearly every type of cell and molecule in the body and are thought to be major factors in aging and age related chronic diseases (including diabetes, arthritis, and more).

AGEs are formed within the body in response to high blood sugar levels and also by eating foods cooked at high temperatures. Think french fries, grilled burgers, potato chips and more! (More at The Arthritis Foundation.)

Our bodies can handle some AGEs but when we get too much, it’s bad news.

What to do?

Well, for starters, reduce your consumption of foods cooked at high temperatures. No, I’m not going to totally give up my french fries - I love them! But I will cut back. Replace those fries with some steamed broccoli and you’re even better off.

Second, take a resveratrol supplement. Be careful which one you choose. In Laboratory studies, Vivix ingredients have been shown to be 10X more powerful than resveratrol alone in slowing AGE protein formation.*

Over-indulgence and your diet plan

Happy Mother's Day!I hope you had a very Happy Mother’s Day! I spent a lovely afternoon sitting on the deck at a local restaurant with my mom. Of course, we did over-indulge “a little.” (Just couldn’t resist that crème brulee!) We spent a couple of hours relaxing and enjoying each other’s company while moving through several courses of delicious food and drink.

Since I’m perpetually trying to shed those extra five pounds, I thought I’d share my “morning after” thoughts with you. Seems to me like the main thing is to get back on the horse. That is, get back to my intention to eat in a healthy, moderate way. When you step off your diet for whatever reason, it is NOT the end of the world. It’s not even the end of your weight loss program!

Most dieters give in to temptation at some point on the way to reaching their weight loss goals.  The fact that you were tempted and gave in is not the issue; it’s how you move on from this point. So many decide, “oh well, I cheated it’s over” when you should really say, “Ok, I messed up, I’m starting again tomorrow.”

Here are some tips to recover from your slip-up:

·      Maintain perspective – It may seem major but it doesn’t have to be. Don’t dwell on what happened – move on.

·      Consider getting some healthy weight loss snacks or meal substitutes to help you out. Cinch has a great set of choices!

·      Plan Ahead – Business trips, vacations, working late at the office…whatever the situation, plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. That way you’re less likely to splurge again.

·      Learn from your mistakes – A mistake is only a mistake if you don’t learn from it.

The biggest risk of your splurge isn’t the splurge. It’s the possibility that you could decide to give up your new healthy habits. Don’t do it! You have a choice to let this be a one-time slip not the end of the road. So get back on the horse and this time be sure you ride a little longer before you slip off.

Gosh, I sure needed to hear that! Thanks for listening while I talked myself back on the horse. Think I’ll go make a nice salad for dinner.
