Resveratrol and Cellular Anti-Aging

Resveratrol is all the rage these days. I’m not usually the first to jump on the band-wagon of a new health fad but this seems like more than a fad. The ability to get the anti-aging benefits of resveratrol in a high-quality supplement brings a lot to the table. Check out what Barbara Walters has to say in this interview.

Sticking To It – The Discipline of Living Healthy

woman-exercise-aerobic-active-healthOK, it’s Saturday morning. That means that at 10am, I should be in my exercise class at the gym. During the week, I work out on my own 2 or 3 times but it’s the Saturday class that kicks me out of my rut and pushes me forward.

Usually it’s no problem for me to get myself there. But today, I just plain didn’t want to go. Didn’t really have a good excuse, just didn’t want to. I could tell it was going to be one of those times when I could just barely keep up with the class and I hate those days!

So, I tried for a while to come up with a reason for not going. Something that really needed doing or someplace I had to be. Fortunately for me, there weren’t any “must do” items today. I was either going to get my tail out there or I was going to have to admit that today I wanted to be lazy more than I wanted to stick with my goals…

Why am I telling you this little personal drama?

Because when you want to lose weight (or even just keep the pounds from coming back), you’re going to have those times when you’d rather skip the exercise. But did you know that the combination of diet and exercise results in about 3 times the success rate for weight loss as either of those alone? So, even when you want to skip the workout, get yourself out there and do it.

The discipline of sticking with it will feel good and build momentum. And the consistent exercise and improved fitness level will increase your baseline metabolic rate. That means you’ll burn more calories just driving to the grocery store! And since it’s really the inches most of us want to lose, keeping the muscle and burning the fat is key. (That’s one of the main principles of Shaklee’s Cinch program.) All of this points to the importance of exercise.

Back to my lazy Saturday.

Yes, I did make it to class. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I usually do. I had a hard time keeping up. My energy abandoned me before the full set was complete on several exercises. BUT I maintained the discipline and I got a workout. That made me feel better about myself than if I had gone back to bed. And it will make it easier to go next week and the week after.

Is Your Water Healthy?

water-pollutionSure, drinking 8 glasses of water each day is a good idea. But those nasty disposable bottles from the grocery store aren’t good for you or for the planet. So, do you turn to tap water? That might not be such a good idea either.

Studies have found as many as 141 unregulated chemicals and an additional 119 for which the Environmental Protection Agency has set health-based limits in ordinary drinking water in the US. Most common among the chemicals found were disinfection byproducts, nitrates, chloroform, barium, arsenic and copper. These chemicals have been implicated in a variety of health issues from cancer to skin problems to digestive disorders.

In September, 2008, the US Geological Survey (USGS) found a significant increase in nitrates in ground water. Nitrate levels in water are regulated by the EPA due to concerns about infant health risks as well as cancer. According to the USGS, as population increases, so does the level of nitrates in our water. Doesn’t seem like the population is going down any time soon, so this issue is likely to only get worse. While this study only looked at nitrates, population and pollution continue to have a negative impact on water quality. Your municipal water treatment system gets a lot of the worst stuff out but your tap water still may not be as good for you as it could be.

What can you do?

First, consider buying food that is sustainably produced and/or organic. Most sustainable and organic farming involves the use of way less chemical fertilizer than ordinary commercially grown products. Since a lot of the nitrates come from fertilizer, supporting sustainable agriculture will help. You may feel like your little bunch of carrots doesn’t make much of a difference, but the more of us who support sustainable farming, the more the balance will shift.

Second, filter your drinking water. Many of the harmful chemicals that are present in ordinary municipal water supplies can be removed by a home filtration system. Get a couple of nice stainless steel bottle to carry with you to work or to the gym and fill them with your filtered water. That way, there’s nothing to put in the local landfill and no unnecessary chemicals in your water.

Two simple actions – one to help the planet, one for your personal health. Yes, we can do something!
